Frequently Asked Questions

For more information on how to vote by mail, please visit the Massachusetts Secretary of State’s website.

Q: Can I vote by mail for Joel McAuliffe in the Massachusetts primary?

A: Yes! Every registered Democratic or unenrolled voter in Massachusetts can vote by mail in the September 6 primary this year. Make sure that you request the Democratic ballot on your vote by mail application.

Q: How do I vote by mail?

A: First, you need to submit a vote by mail application. An application will be mailed to all Massachusetts voters at the address where they are registered to vote (as long as you are registered to vote by August 17th). Once you request your ballot, you’ll receive it in the mail. Vote for Joel McAuliffe on your ballot, and then mail it back!

If you do not receive a ballot application in the mail, you can download and print one out here

Q: How can I email my application instead of sending it by mail?

A: Emailing your ballot application is an easy way to request a ballot so you can vote by mail. You can either sign your application by hand or sign your name on your screen, and email an image of your application to the Chicopee Registrar of Voters at bgalindo@chicopeema.gov. Please note that typed signatures are not acceptable.

Q: When should I expect to receive my vote by mail application?

A: The Secretary of the Commonwealth will deliver an application to all individuals registered to vote before July 23rd. Expect that application to arrive in mid July. If you don’t want to wait or you need your ballot sent somewhere else, you can download a ballot application here.

Q: What is the deadline to send in my vote by mail application?

A: Apply for your vote by mail application as soon as possible. The Chicopee Registrar of Voters needs to receive your ballot application by August 30th, but mail can take up to a week to be delivered in each direction, so we recommend sending in your application at least two to three weeks before the September 6th primary election. This will safely allow time for your application to get to your local election office, for the ballot to get back to you, and for you to mail your completed ballot back.

Q: What is the deadline to mail in my ballot?

A: Your ballot must be received by your town’s elections office by 8:00PM EDT on September 6th to be counted for the Democratic primary. It can take up to a week for mail to be delivered, so mail in your ballot as soon as possible.

Q: How can I make sure my ballot makes it in and gets counted?

A: Once you fill out and mail your ballot application, you can check the status of your ballot online. If you do not see a record of your ballot on the website, you should contact the Chicopee Registrar of Voters at 413-594-1550.

Q: Does it cost money to vote by mail? Do I need a stamp?

A: Voting by mail is free. Vote by mail applications and ballots that are mailed to you will be pre-addressed to your local election official and pre-stamped.

Q: Can I vote early in-person instead?

A: You can vote early in-person in the Massachusetts Primary between August 27th and September 2nd at Chicopee City Hall located at 274 Front Street. Contact the Chicopee City Clerk for hours at 413-594-1466

Q: Can I vote for Joel McAuliffe on Election Day?

A: You can vote in-person for Joel McAuliffe at your local polling location. You can find your local polling location here.

Q: What if I already signed up to receive my ballots by mail this year?

A: Then you’re all set! You will receive your ballot in the mail in early August. Please complete your ballot and mail it in as soon as possible.

Q: What is the difference between voting by mail and voting absentee?

A: An absentee ballot is typically requested by a voter who is not able to vote in-person on Election Day. The most recent Massachusetts legislation allows all voters a similar opportunity to vote by mail, regardless of whether or not they are able to vote in-person.
